GeoSnapper.com is a really neat (free) service that combines location data with the wonderfully expressive world of photography. Even better, they now give you a way to automatically send your photos to Flagr!

Here's one of our most avid "geosnapper's".

Add-A-Flag v2.0 - Now with Business Lookup!

Posted by Dave Wed, 17 May 2006 19:37:00 GMT

In this most recent update, we've included the ability to add a flag by business name or landmark! This will come in handy while on the go, when you at a place that doesn't have a posted address...

You can now enter things like "Buckingham's Oyster Bay NY" or "Mario's Pizza 11771"..no need to look on the business card or street sign. Just tell us where you at and we'll take care of the rest.

It gets better! Popular landmarks may also work. For example, all of the following are valid locations: "Grand Canyon", "Pier 39 San Francisco CA" and "Federal Reserve New York NY".

This is just another baby step to make your flagn' experience easier. More to come in the future...

Remember: If you specify a default zip, you can leave off the city while flagn in your area...in other words "Great italian@Mario's Pizza" is a perfectly valid flag assuming there is such a place in your default zip! It doesn't get better than that (and if it does, we'll add it soon)!

Video / Music on Flagr

Posted by Cole Sat, 13 May 2006 20:24:00 GMT

Anterrabae, a band from Long Island NY, is the first to have video in their profile and music on a flag. They're using flagr to share where they'll be touring in the next couple weeks. Pretty cool stuff.

New Version (now with API!)

Posted by Matt Thu, 11 May 2006 16:10:00 GMT

Things were getting a bit dusty around here so we decided to push a new version of Flagr.

In this release we added a truly RESTful API. You can search for flags, retrieve a specific flag or create a new flag. A client from MobileGlu, which incorporates the API will be coming out shortly. We hope they are the first which take advantage of our API. Just let us know when you create a super sweet mashup and we'll post it here.

We also changed up the friends page a bit. We added the ability to find people that live near you. So go out and make a new friend today.

Flagr Makes Business 2.0 - "Your Wireless Future"

Posted by Dave Sat, 29 Apr 2006 20:30:00 GMT

Flagr was very recently mentioned in a feature article entitled "Your Wireless Future" of the May 2006 Business2.0 Magazine. The article lists the companies to watch in the "Location Based Service" space, and Flagr was listed second. They went as far as to adopt our lingo, referring to marking locations on a map as "flagging".

"Some tips will be passive, like a flagged comment that this restaurant serves good barbecue."

Pick up a copy for yourself. The article is on a nice looking pullout in the center of the magazine on page 127. I would copy the entire text, but I'm almost positive that's some type of infringement...Enjoy!

New! Flagr Google Homepage Widget

Posted by Dave Mon, 24 Apr 2006 22:38:00 GMT

Good news! We've completed the first version of the Flagr homepage module. To take it for a spin, click here or the icon below. It currently supports FireFox and Internet Explorer.

Add to Google

The basic functionality is all there...This includes:

Search:
* Type in a keyword and view all flags that match. The search bar will appear to display the total flag number that satisfies the search, and allow you to clear the search to view all flags.

Exploration:
* Drag the map in different directions and new flags will load. If you have initiated a search, only flags that satisfy your search will be displayed.

Image viewing:
* Click on flags that have an image and it will enlarge to the full size of the module.

Customization:
* Start location: Click edit and enter your zipcode of choice. By default, it uses Mountain view but other (non-WiFi) Google users can change this to their home town to view flags in their area. This makes the module more widely applicable.

* Customized pop up window width: Since horizontal space is very limited, we've set the default width of the bubble windows close to the minimum value of 217px. However, for users with larger screen resolutions, the ability to increase the width up to 340px is available. This allows flags with more content to be read without causing the map to recenter too dramatically.

*Safari and Opera are not yet supported.

Comments! All in one place...

Posted by Dave Tue, 11 Apr 2006 04:47:00 GMT

Hey All!
Check out the new comments page! Now you can finally see who has said what about your flags. Visit: http://flagr.com/comments/[enter username here] or click the link from your summary page.

The page gives you the option to see comments since you've last signed in, since last week, or all of them. Here's a screenshot:

We've also rebuilt the bug and wishlist system, so it no longer looks like it fell off the ugly tree...As always, let us know what you think! And ask for free stickers! (see below)

The start of it all...

Posted by Dave Tue, 11 Apr 2006 01:52:00 GMT

So here is one of the things that first sparked the idea of Flagr...The cofounders (Matt, Cole, and I) went on a photographic journey to Maine. Matt brought his GPS device, and we tracked our trip, geotagging pictures along the way.

Cool, eh?

Google Maps V2

Posted by Matt Wed, 05 Apr 2006 13:53:00 GMT

Google just released a new version of their API and we updated Flagr to use it.

For our international users out there, two additional zoom levels of Satellite imagery were added.

For our Internet Explorer users out there, the rendering issues with the flag popup windows should be fixed.

If you notice anything amiss doesn't hesitate to post a bug.

Flagr gets a facelift!

Posted by Dave Tue, 04 Apr 2006 05:31:00 GMT

You've probably already noticed but...We've modified the look and feel of Flagr, cleaned up the CSS and code, and fixed some annoying bugs. We're very excited about the new look.

Most importantly, we've finally implemented a map on our homepage. You no longer need to click explore...it's all right there...waiting for your interaction. Also, check out the featured flags on the front page.

One more thing! We've updated our worldliness algorithm, which put Altzgamer in the lead by a landslide. Congrats my friend. Check out The results.

There are many little things we'll change in the next week or so, but we thought we'd throw it out there for your enjoyment.

Tell us what you think!

Mobile flags are picking up...

Posted by Dave Sun, 02 Apr 2006 22:57:00 GMT

Seems like people are starting to use mobile flags more...a whole crew of folks on Long Island, especially. Rachel - Jessi - Santina

Glad to see it! About 3.442% of all flags on flagr are mobile. Can we make it 5%?

Dear Comcast

Posted by Dave Thu, 30 Mar 2006 04:23:00 GMT

We'd really like to thank you for the two days of no internet connectivity. It was a real hoot trying to run a web startup without the web.

With love,
Flagr.com
